Decorative glass makers bet on back-painted colour for kitchens
Back-painted glass splashbacks are displacing tile in urban apartments.

Back-painted glass has quietly become the default splashback in new urban apartments, replacing tiles that trap grease in their grout lines.
Manufacturers now offer more than 200 colours and will match paint samples from interior designers within a week.

Clients want one seamless surface they can wipe. Glass gives them that.
Installers caution that the glass must be toughened near hobs and that adhesives must be compatible with the paint layer to avoid discolouration.
Specifying it well
Designers should confirm edge finishing, fixing method and cleaning guidance with the supplier at drawing stage. Most site problems with decorative glass trace back to details agreed too late.
