Electric vehicle makers want large panoramic roofs, but every kilogram of glass and every watt of solar heat reduces driving range.

We spoke to automotive glazing engineer Tarun Bhatia about how suppliers are responding with thinner laminates and infrared-reflective coatings.

In an EV, the glass is part of the battery strategy. Weight and heat both cost range.

He says acoustic interlayers have also become standard, because the absence of engine noise makes wind and road noise far more noticeable.

What changes for workshops

Workshops will need calibration equipment, cleaner bonding procedures and better training. The days of a quick windshield swap in a car park are numbered for modern vehicles.
